OUR HISTORY
In 1977, John E. Brooks purchased Pitt's Sign Company in Oak Ridge, Tennessee and started Southern Signs Inc in a small building on the edge of town. At first, he did hand lettering & POP displays. Then, in 1978, he purchased our first crane truck which was a 35' hand cranked manual operated system, built a homemade vacuum face former and started building fluorescent and neon illuminated signs.
In 1979, James K. Brooks Sr. began working at the company and helped his father grow the business by purchasing more equipment and entering the electronic sign age by teaming up with American Sign & Indicator to install some of the first electronic message centers and time and temperature signs in the eastern United States. With an artistic background and an attention to detail, James quickly built a reputation of quality & increased sales. He led the company into the petroleum industry by reimaging fuel and market stations for large local distributors which are still our customers today.
In 1989, in order to meet the increasing workload, John and James Sr. built a new 6,000 square foot office and fabrication facility on John's home place land in Strawberry Plains, TN. This move allowed Southern Signs Inc to become more centrally located to better serve our customers within a 100 mile radius of Knoxville, TN.
In 1990, Sheila A. Brooks, the wife of James Sr., joined the company to manage the office & get the company on solid ground. Together, they grew the business even more.
In 2011, James K. Brooks Jr. joined the business. Trained & experienced as a certified welder & crane operator, Keith Jr. quickly worked his way up to become our installation foreman. His energetic work ethic & attention to detail streamlined the install process and reduced wait times for our customers.
In 2012, Jessica A. "Brooks" Willis joined the business. With a college degree in Family Business, a great personality & never quit attitude, she reorganized the office & business to keep up with today's demanding requirements & pace.
As of today, Southern Signs Inc is one of the oldest & largest sign companies in the Knoxville, TN area. The Brooks family takes pride in providing our customers with top notch customer service, state of the art fabrication and on time, quality installations that are second to none in the industry.
